Convert a number between binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal
Understanding number systems
Binary (BIN) — base 2, digits 0 and 1
- Used by all computers.
- Every piece of data is ultimately 0s and 1s.
- 8 bits = 1 byte.
- Example: 1010₂ = 10 in decimal.
Octal (OCT) — base 8, digits 0–7
- Was popular in older computer systems.
- Easy to convert to and from binary — 3 binary digits = 1 octal digit.
- Example: 12₈ = 10 in decimal.
Decimal (DEC) — base 10, digits 0–9
- The everyday number system humans use.
- Based on counting with 10 fingers.
- Example: 10₁₀ = 10.
Hexadecimal (HEX) — base 16, digits 0–9 and A–F
- Widely used in programming and memory addresses.
- Easy to convert to and from binary — 4 binary digits = 1 hex digit.
- Example: A₁₆ = 10 in decimal.
